But as a new mum, you may be equally nervous and excited about designing your baby’s nursery so that it’s just right for your newborn. Design and Décor
Undoubtedly the most fun part of planning your baby’s new nursery is choosing a theme and decorations for the room. There are so many imaginative themes to choose from, but some of the most popular are nature, animals, nautical, toys, and fairytale-based themes. Whether you paint the walls or decide to use wallpaper, choose a calming colour like green, blue, purple, or tan as a base. Self-adhesive wall decorations and stickers are a great choice for a baby’s room, as they can be easily removed from the walls if you decide to update the theme of the room later on.
Furniture Essentials
While it’s easy to get caught up in the cute designs and decorations available for your newborn’s first room, choosing the right nursery furniture for the room is important as well. Many new mums choose to have their baby’s sleep in a Moses basket for the first few weeks or months, but some babies are ready to sleep in a cot immediately. Basic models have three height-adjustable sides and one drop side that can be fitted snugly against your bed.
The other main fixture of your baby’s new nursery is the changing station, which of course facilitates in the quick changing and removal of dirty nappies. The most standard models include three tiers, while more elaborate ones come with built-in cabinetry units so that you don’t have to waste space with a separate dresser unit. Make sure to place a carpet or non-skid rug underneath the changing table to prevent it from sliding.
If space allows, you may consider adding a few other furniture pieces to your baby’s new nursery. Dresser units provide additional storage for all the new baby clothes and accessories you’ve purchased, while a cot-side chair will provide you with a place to nurse your newborn.
Lighting
Lighting is also a critical component in your baby’s first bedroom, as too much of it will make the little one agitated and cranky, while too little will leave you fumbling around in the dark every time you have to change a nappy in the middle of the night. Dimmer systems are the best choice for overhead lighting, and should be complemented by accent lamps or nightlights near the cot or changing station. Blackout curtains or heavy blinds are also a great choice to create a restful sleeping environment for the baby when you put him or her down for naptime.
